A Cause worth Taking Up

Fri Jun 19, 2009, 6:03 PM
ATTN: Other DA members. If you could copy this to one of your journal entries, I would appreciate it immensely.

Shout Factory has done some exemplary work with the DVD's they have released of show they have licensed from other companies. Freaks and Geeks, Home Movies, Sam and Max: Freelance Police, Father Knows Best, Mr. Belvedere, McHale's Navy, the list goes on and on. They are even coming out with a Mr. Ed DVD, despite the recent legal entanglements that show has been involved in.

However, there is something I would give anything to see Shout release.

Viacom owns the rights to all of the old Max Fleischer Betty Boop cartoons, various cartoons featuring Casper, Little Lulu, Baby Huey, Puppetoons made by George Pal, and the entire Terrytoons library featuring Mighty Mouse and company. However, no one who has owned the rights to these cartoons has done anything with them for years. Lionsgate has had home video rights to Betty Boop and most of the others for almost 20 years now, but they've never done anything with them since they don't feature Speed Racer or the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The Terrytoons have been in a similar boat for almost as long.

I believe, that if there's a company that could license the rights to these cartoons and do them justice, it's Shout!.

Shout Factory has a forum on their website where people can suggest shows that they'd like to see Shout release on DVD. Often Shout employees will weigh in on the feasibility of releasing those shows.

On the GAC forums (forums.goldenagecartoons.com) I casually tossed around the idea of doing posts in Shout's forum about the Fleischer and Terrytoons cartoons, and a couple of my animation buff associates just ran with the idea.

We are currently trying to convince anyone interested to register for the Shout forums, and just write about how you'd like to see Shout obtain the cartoons and release them, so we can keep our threads visible and hopefully help Shout see how much interest there is for these cartoons. Is it a longshot? Who the hell knows, but I personally this is worth a shot just like anything else.

I reach out to anyone who might read this; Are you game for this?
